Whether you have never read it yourself, tried to get into it and given up, or read it many times over, Shaw captures the tone and spirit of Tolkien's works in a way that I have never experienced before in 20 years of consuming Tolkien media.
I bring this up because, regardless of where you stand on the show or how dedicated you consider yourself to be as a Tolkien fan, I highly recommend that you give Martin Shaw's reading of Tolkien's Silmarillion a try. We were brought to tears on multiple occasions listening to him read Tolkien's words. I usually prefer to read books over listening to audiobooks, but my God, Martin Shaw is an incredible orator and even my partner was riveted by his rendition of the Ainulindalë and the Vala Quenta. She is not much of a Tolkien fan but was willing to humor me and since we had to drive a couple hours Saturday morning I fired it up. I've read the book multiple times but it's been over a decade since my last reading. This weekend my partner and I took off for a backpacking trip in the mountains and I decided to download the audiobook of the Silmarillion read by Martin Shaw.
I spent way too much time on Reddit Thursday night/Friday debating with people and agonizing over various aspects of the latest episode. I think we've all seen the polarizing effect the new series has had on this sub, to be perfectly honest I am guilty of contributing to the strife and turmoil as an open critic of the show myself.
